Socialist Presidential Candidates Criticize Biden Speech to UN General Assembly

Claudia De la Cruz and Karina Garcia, presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, call for a foreign policy based on peace and respect for other nations’ independence

Socialist presidential candidate Claudia De la Cruz and her running mate Karina Garcia rejected the speech given by Joe Biden at the United Nations General Assembly today, during which he emphasized the core priorities of U.S. imperial foreign policy.

De la Cruz said that, “It is shameful that Biden used his address at the UN to double down on the key narratives the U.S. government is using to push its new Cold War agenda. Whether it’s support for never-ending war in Ukraine or the demonization of China’s government, the purpose of Biden’s rhetoric is to bring us further down the road to catastrophic global conflict.” She added that for peace to prevail in the world, “The U.S. government must immediately cease all arms shipments to Ukraine, and end its policy of encircling China with military bases.”

Karina Garcia addressed Biden’s supposed sympathy for developing nations, “Biden’s talk about support for the Global South are all just empty promises. He represents the corporations and wealthy executives who grow rich exploiting the people and resources of Africa, Asia and Latin America.” She continued, “Any assistance the Biden administration offers will be a drop in the bucket compared with this systematic looting of underdeveloped countries – a phenomenon that forces countless people to migrate every year.”

Claudia De la Cruz laid out the campaign’s vision for a new type of foreign policy, “We want to end the U.S. empire. Instead of waging war, plundering resources and orchestrating coups, a socialist United States would approach the world first and foremost with a sense of respect for the independence of other nations. Working people in the United States would benefit enormously from this because the resources that are currently wasted on death and destruction could be redirected to meet human needs.”
