Socialist Presidential Candidate, Claudia De la Cruz, secures South Carolina Workers Party Ballot Line

Socialist organizers, mothers, educators and longtime anti-war activists Claudia De la Cruz and Karina Garcia were democratically selected to be the South Carolina Workers Party candidates for President and Vice President of the United States. This will be the first time since 1940 that socialists will be on the ballot in South Carolina.

On Saturday, Mach 16, 2024, the S.C. Workers Party held its annual convention and with over 60 people in attendance, the county delegates voted overwhelmingly to choose Claudia De la Cruz and running mate, Karina Garcia, as the Workers Party nominees. The Claudia-Karina 2024 campaign has secured ballot access under the Party for Socialism and Liberation ballot line in other states including Utah, Hawai’i and Idaho. In California, they won the recent Peace and Freedom Party (PFP) primary and expect to be officially named the nominee at the upcoming convention.

Claudia De la Cruz said, “We are honored to be the candidates of the South Carolina Workers Party. South Carolina has the lowest rates of unionization in the country and Columbia, S.C.’s 29203 is the zip code with the highest rates of diabetic amputations in the country. From universal healthcare to the right to unionize to quality housing and jobs for all, I believe the Vote Socialist campaign and Workers Party can work together in this critical moment when the Biden administration continues funding the Israeli attacks on Gaza while ignoring the needs of poor and working people at home. We hope many more will join the fight for the dignity of South Carolinians and unite their interests with those of millions of working people in the country and around the world.”

Gary Votour of the Workers Party said, “The SC Workers Party believes all South Carolinians have a right to equal access to health care, to earn a living wage, to form Unions to bargain collectively, and to be free of discrimination based on sex, race, or sexual identity. It's time we have leadership in SC that believes in these rights with all their heart.”
